Second civil filing in Phila. court against convicted child molester Sandusky, Penn State and Second Mile

The fallout from the Pennsylvania State University child sex-abuse scandal continued late

last week when the second civil filing by a Jerry Sandusky molestation victim was submitted in state court.

Court records show that a man identified only as “John Doe B” filed what is known in legal jargon as a writ of summons at the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

A “writ” is paperwork filed signaling an intention to sue. The document was filed June 28 by Williamsport, Pa. attorney Clifford A. Rieders.

It names as defendants Gerald Sandusky, Penn State University and The Second Mile, which is the youth charity founded by Sandusky in the late 1970s and is credited with being the place where the convicted child molester met and groomed many of his victims.

Sandusky was found guilty last month on 45 of the 48 counts of child sex-abuse against him for molesting 10 boys over a 15-year time period. He is currently housed in the Centre County (Pa.) jail awaiting sentencing.

The writ filed at Common Pleas Court is the second civil legal action filed in the venue on behalf of a Sandusky sex-abuse victim.

It does not really offer specifics with regard to the plaintiff’s claims since a writ simply signals a plan to sue.

But if the claims in the forthcoming lawsuit are anything like those previously alleged in another civil complaint, they likely stem from sex-abuse the victim suffered at the hands of Sandusky, who was formerly the assistant defensive coordinator for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team.

The filing comes on the heels of another complaint filed in state court on behalf of a Sandusky victim.

Back in November, shortly after Sandusky learned of the criminal charges against him through a grand jury presentment, St. Paul, Minn. Attorney Jeff Anderson filed a lawsuit at Philadelphia’s Common Pleas Court on behalf of a man known only as “John Doe A,” who claims he was molested by Sandusky in 1992 when he was 10 years old. That suit states that Doe A and Sandusky met through The Second Mile.

Sandusky, Penn State and The Second Mile are all named as defendants in that suit as well.

The writ case ID number is 120603727.
