Judge approves stipulation halting transferring of Second Mile's assets pending resolution of civil claims

A judge in Centre County has approved of a stipulation that had been filed between The Second Mile, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and counsel for Jerry Sandusky’s sex-abuse victims that puts on hold any distribution of assets by The Second Mile pending the resolution of civil claims against Sandusky.

Judge William F. Moran, of the Centre County Orphans’ Court, approved in an order made public Sept. 4 the agreement that had been filed by the various parties relating to the pending dissolution of The Second Mile, the charity started by convicted child molester and former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

The Second Mile had earlier sought judicial approval for the transferring of its assets to a Texas family and youth organization, but attorneys for some of Sandusky’s victims objected, saying the organization should halt the transferring of any assets and dissolution until lawsuits against Sandusky were resolved.

All three parties filed a stipulation last week that says The Second Mile agrees to such terms; it required a judge’s signature.

In a separate order, Morgan said that because the stipulation has been approved, there is no need to hold a status conference that had originally been scheduled for Sept. 7.

Sandusky, who is in his late 60s, was formerly the defensive coordinator for the Penn State Nittany Lions.

In June, following a much-followed jury trial at the Centre County Common Pleas Court, Sandusky was found guilty of sexually abusing 10 young boys over a 15-year time frame.

Sandusky, who most likely faces the rest of his life in prison, has since been sued civilly by some of his victims.

The Second Mile has been named as a defendant in the pending litigation.

Sandusky had founded The Second Mile in the late 1970s to help disadvantaged youth.
