Senior citizen alleges unlawful termination

PHILADELPHIA - A Columbia County senior citizen is suing a Berwick company, alleging multiple infringements of federal and state employment law.

Sharon Yaple of Berwick filed a lawsuit April 30 against Berwick Offray in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, alleging age discrimination in her 2014 job discharge.

According to the complaint, Yaple, 70, was employed by the defendant from 1989 until mid-May 2014, working as a packer and machine operator. The suit says she was among the oldest staffers and was subjected to differential treatment because of her age.

The suit states Yaple was terminated suddenly May 14, 2014, the defendant did not follow standard procedure in her dismissal and Berwick Offray did not subject younger employees to the same disciplinary measures used for her.

The plaintiff alleges severe emotional distress, embarrassment, humiliation, and loss of self-esteem and enjoyment of life.

Yaple seeks back and front pay, punitive and compensatory damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, attorney and expert witness fees and court costs. She is represented by attorney Sidney L. Gold of Sidney L. Gold & Associates in Philadelphia.

U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania case number 4:15-cv-01241-MWB.
