Employee alleges racial discrimination at St. Mary Medical Center

PHILADELPHIA - A New Jersey woman is suing the medical center she worked at, alleging discrimination based on her race.

Sharon Scipio filed a lawsuit June 30 in a U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, alleging racial discrimination.

According to the filing, Sharon Scipio, an African-American, began working at the medical center in December 2007 and endured disparate treatment because of her race. The suit says the center’s supervisors would belittle and yell obscenities at Scipio, including one supervisor who called African-American nurses “indentured servants.”

Scipio alleges she was assigned more and difficult patients and was forced to work in a stressful environment.

The suit states because of a stressful work environment and the failure of management to respond to the plaintiff’s complaints, Scipio took a leave from work in 2015 and has not returned.

Scipio seeks an unspecified amount in damages for suffering, past economic loss, future economic loss, back pay, benefits, damaged reputation and loss of promotional opportunity as well as attorney fees. She is being represented by attorney Gregg Zeff of the Zeff Law firm.
