PHILADELPHIA - A Nebraska mother is suing a drug company over the safety of its antidepressant medication.
Angela Moore filed a lawsuit July 1 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against the Delaware drug-manufacturing corporation Pfizer Inc. and its subsidiary Greenstone LLC.
According to the filing, Moore took both the generic version of the prescription drug Zoloft and Zoloft during her pregnancy, including the first trimester. The plaintiff alleges that her child was born with birth defects in 2009 as a direct result of taking the medication during her pregnancy.
The suit states that despite Pfizer’s knowledge of the danger of birth defects, the company failed to warn consumers, including the plaintiff, that the drug significantly increases the risk of heart malformations and other birth defects.
The plaintiff seeks judgement in her favor for damages in excess of $75,000. She is represented by Jeffrey Lowe and Sarah Shoemake Doles of the law firm Carey Danis & Lowe in St. Louis.
