Wife sues medical providers over husband's death

A Pittsburg woman is suing two medical providers over malpractice that resulted in the death of her husband.

Tanya Hankins-Hollinger filed a lawsuit July 6 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against University of Pittsburg Medical Center Shadyside Hospital and the United States of America, which operates the Pittsburg VA Medical Center.

According to the filing, the plaintiff's husband presented symptoms of chest pain during a visit at UMPC's emergency room in 2012 and was discharged with non-cardiac symptoms. In July 2013 the patient sought treatment for bronchitic symptoms from his doctor at the VA Medical Center, but the doctor failed to follow through with a recommended Chest CT.

In September 2014 the plaintiff’s husband sought treatment for chest pain and a cough at the Veteran’s Administration Emergency Department and tests confirmed that he had stage 4 adenocarcinoma of the lung. The plaintiff’s husband died in October 2014 as a result of the cancer.

The plaintiff seeks a judgment in her favor for damages of $5 million from UPMC Shadyside Hospital and $5 million from the U.S. government. She is represented by Scott Glasssmith of Gismondi and Associates.
