SCRANTON – A Scranton woman is suing her insurance company for allegedly cutting off her disability benefits when she claims that they did not factor in her treating physicians, who ruled her completely and totally disabled.

Deborah Lahey filed a lawsuit Nov. 18 against Relia Star Life Insurance Co. in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania alleging violations of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

Lahey, whose ailments include neuropathy, clinical depression, high blood pressure and chronic migraine headaches, has been disabled from regular employment, under the terms of her insurance policy, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims Relia Star Life Insurance issued a decision dated Oct. 13 denying her an ongoing claim for long-term disability. However, according to the lawsuit, the insurance company did not properly factor in all of Lahey’s treating medical physicians, which found her to be completely and totally disabled.

She is seeking long-term disability benefits, together to the present and into the future as provide by her insurance. Lahey is being represented by Edwin A. Abrahamsen Jr. of Abrahamsen, Conaboy and Abrahamsen, P.C. of Scranton.
