Deaf man sues health center alleging he was denied an ASL interpreter during his care

PHILADELPHIA – A deaf man is suing a health center for alleged violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act after he claims he was deprived the accommodations that he required and requested.

Alfred Estrada filed a complaint of Dec. 21 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Crozer Keystone Health Systems and Crozer Chester Medical Center, alleging violation of ADA.

According to the complaint, Estrada suffered an allergic reaction Feb. 18, after using Icy Hot on his back. When he arrived at the defendant's medical center, he received aid, but not instruction that he could understand,  nor was he provided an American Sign Language interpreter.

He returned to the center in May when he began to experience abdominal pain, but the defendant discriminated against Estrada when it failed to provide him with an interpreter, thus resulting in dangerous and painful complications, the complaint states.

Estrada is seeking compensation for wrongs suffered and damages. He is represented by Sagar Shah, Eric Baum and Andrew Rozynski of Eisenberg and Baum LLP in New York.
