PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh woman is suing Cigna, alleging she was denied insurance benefits.
Theresa Gladney filed a lawsuit Jan. 4 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against Cigna Group Insurance Company and Life Insurance Company of North America alleging she was wrongfully denied benefits.
According to the complaint, on April 13, 2014, Gladney was involved in a car accident in which rendered her disabled. She was provided with a short-term disability policy and received benefits from April 2014 until October 2014.
In October 2014, the suit says, she satisfied the requirements for long-term benefits but the following February these long-term benefits were terminated. Cigna said Gladney was no longer injured to the point of disability in the workplace, even though she was able to provide medical evidence proving her disability, the lawsuit states.
Ultimately, the benefits were denied because the defendant alleged a doctor did not return a phone call, the suit says.
Gladney seeks damages for lost benefits as well as legal fees. She is represented by attorney William F. Goodrich of Goodrich and Geist PC in Pittsburgh.
