Woman claims she was fired from Beaver Steel for gender discrimination

PITTSBURGH — A woman is suing a steel company over allegations that she was fired for gender discrimination and for reporting insensitive behavior.

Carrianne Candal filed a lawsuit on Feb. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against Beaver Steel Services Inc., citing violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act (PHRA).

According to the complaint, Candal was hired as an office manager by the defendant on Jan. 6, 2015. The plaintiff claims that she was subjected to discriminatory remarks about women from the defendant’s controller, beginning in early September 2015.

On Sept. 28, 2015, the plaintiff spoke to the vice president and the owner of the company regarding the offensive remarks. Candal was then allegedly scolded in a meeting the following week for making the controller look bad. The plaintiff was terminated on Oct. 16, 2015, which she claims was not a reflection of her performance but as a result of gender discrimination in violation of Title VII and the PHRA.

Candal seeks wages and benefits lost due to her termination, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, attorneys’ fees, and costs. She is represented by Joseph H. Chivers of The Employment Rights Group in Pittsburgh.
