ERIE, Pa. -- The federal government is suing Erie Coke Corporation, a Pennsylvania company, alleging violation of federal environmental law.
The United States of America filed a complaint on Sept. 29 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, alleging Erie Coke violated the Clean Air Act.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges it suffered damages from the company's actions.
The government holds Erie Coke responsible because the defendant allegedly discharges benzene waste and other harmful contaminants into the air from its facility.
The plaintiff seeks the preparation of a complete statement of implementation and report, payment of a civil penalty not to exceed $37,000 per day for each violation, and any further relief this court grants.
It is represented by Elliot M. Rockler of the Environmental Enforcement Section in Washington.
