Phoenixville woman sues St. Jude Medical for faulty heart implant

Medical malpractice 04

PHILADELPHIA — A patient is suing St. Jude Medical Inc., citing alleged insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries, liability and negligence stemming from a defective implant she received in a heart surgery performed at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in 2010.

Kristen A. Bull of Phoenixville filed a complaint on March 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against St. Jude, alleging that it manufactured defective components for an implantable cardiac defibrillator.

According to the complaint, Bull alleges that she sustained damages due to having the defective implant. The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible because it allegedly failed to warn the plaintiff regarding the defective nature of its medical implant; the complaint reads that St. Jude was in the process of phasing out, rather than recalling, the implant components even though it knew of their ineffectiveness.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount that exceeds $75,000 plus court costs and any further relief the court grants. She is represented by Steven E. Angstreich, Carolyn C. Lindheim and Amy R. Brandt of Weir & Partners LLP in Philadelphia.
