Phoenixville couple claim Stryker hip implant failed

PHILADELPHIA — A husband and wife are suing Howmedica Osteonics Corporation d/b/a Stryker Orthopaedics, a New Jersey corporation, citing alleged design defect, negligence and product liability for a faulty hip implant.

Charles Melle & Susan Purtell of Phoenixville filed a complaint on April 27 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania alleging that the defendants manufactured a defective hip implant.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that they were injured from the failure of Melle's implant, which was manufactured by defendant, in which the head of the stem was displaced and started to corrode. The plaintiffs Stryker Orthopaedics responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to warn the plaintiff regarding the possibility of corrosion of its hip implant.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek compensatory damages, special damages, medical expenses, double or triple damages, court costs, interest, punitive damages and any further relief this court grants. They are represented by Michael C. Schafle of Green Schafle Gibbs LLC in Philadelphia.
