Man alleges Unum Life Insurance Co. of America wrongfully denied benefit claims

Insurance 09

PHILADELPHIA – A Glen Mills man alleges his claims for short and long-term disability benefits were unlawfully denied.

Craig Baker filed a complaint on June 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Unum Life Insurance Co. of America alleging violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that he applied for short-term disability benefits in May 2016 and for long-term disability benefits in August 2016 because of several heart-related issues. The suit states that the defendant denied his claims over its claims that the plaintiff's conditions were work-relate, which the plaintiff alleges is not supported by medical evidence.

The plaintiff seeks payment of all benefits, total benefits, court costs, interest, delay damages and any further relief the court grants. He is represented by Mary LeMieux-Fillery of Martin Law in Philadelphia and by Clifford D. Swift in Lancaster.
