Daughter files malpractice suit against UPMC Presbyterian Hospital of Pittsburgh

Medical malpractice 05

PITTSBURGH – The daughter of a late Harrisonville man's estate has filed suit against medical providers after they allegedly failed to follow through with a plan for emergency surgery.

Kiley Bright, administratrix of the estate of Ronald F. Ostrander, filed a complaint on Feb. 22 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against UPMC, University of Pittsburgh Physicians and UPMC Presbyterian Hospital of Pittsburgh alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that Ostrander presented to the Fulton County Medical Center on Sept. 11, 2017, with complaints of pain. The suit states he was treated for hernias there and later airlifted UPMC Presby for emergency surgery, which was not performed based on a doctor's assessment. The suit states Ostrander was found unresponsive in his room the next day and was later pronounced dead.

The plaintiff holds UPMC, University of Pittsburgh Physicians and UPMC Presbyterian Hospital of Pittsburgh responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to follow through the plan for emergency surgery, failed to assure basic resuscitation equipment was immediately available and ready for use and failed to appropriately act on his complaints of pain.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount that exceeds the jurisdictional limits of this court. She is represented by Harry S. Cohen of Harry S. Cohen & Associates PC in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
