In honor of the 20th anniversary of the EEOC's mediation program, the Pittsburgh Field Office will host an open house where the public can meet Pittsburgh Area Office Director Roosevelt Bryant and EEOC mediation staff and learn about the benefits of the EEOC's ADR program.
The use of mediation is a key component of the EEOC's efforts to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. Mediation is a form of ADR offered by EEOC early in the process to facilitate resolution without lengthy investigations or litigation. The decision to mediate is completely voluntary for the person(s) making the discrimination charge and the employer, and the mediation process is strictly confidential at every stage. During a mediation session, a neutral third-party facilitator helps the parties reach a negotiated resolution of workplace disputes. Unlike an arbitrator or judge, the mediator does not resolve the charge or impose a decision on the parties. Instead, the mediator helps the parties to agree on a mutually acceptable resolution that results in a win-win outcome for everyone involved.
Participants in the EEOC's mediation program indicate a high degree of satisfaction with the program. It is a fair and efficient process that can avoid a lengthy investigation and the possibility of unnecessary litigation.
