Former Pittsburgh worker claims he was fired for lawfully using medical marijuana

State Court

PITTSBURGH – A former Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority worker alleges he was falsely terminated for lawfully using medical marijuana to treat his post-traumatic stress disorder.

Terrence Suber filed a complaint Nov. 17 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) alleging violation of a clear mandate of public policy.

Suber began working for PWSA on March 4 as a customer service representative at the Pittsburgh facility. According to his complaint, Suber was diagnosed with PTSD in May and lawfully uses medical marijuana as treatment.

The suit states on June 25, the plaintiff was required to take a drug test, which came back positive for marijuana. Despite notifying PWSA of his valid medical marijuana card, Suber alleges he was terminated for the positive drug test results and that his job did not require any of the prohibited employment activities under the Medical Marijuana Act.

Suber seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest and all other fair and proper relief. He is represented by Samuel Dion of Dion & Goldberger in Philadelphia.
