WASHINGTON – A Philadelphia-area attorney with extensive background in representing plaintiffs for both pharmaceutical and medical device litigation was recently chosen as the new President of the American Association for Justice, which was formerly known as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

The AAJ, the national group for plaintiffs lawyers, announced on July 17 that its new President was Tobias “Tobi” Millrood.

Millrood, a partner at Pogust Millrood in Conshohocken, has more than 25 years of complex litigation experience and specializes in pharmaceuticals and medical devices lawsuits.

“I am humbled to serve as president of AAJ during these unprecedented times. From the economic and health calamities caused by the pandemic, to the existential crisis confronting our nation on race relations and authority in America, this is going to be a year filled with constant challenges, but also opportunities for civil justice to help shape the direction of our nation,” Millrood said.

Millrood has been appointed by numerous judges as chief counsel in a number of high-profile national drug and device litigations, and was the first attorney to file a hormone therapy lawsuit in the U.S. Millrood pursued it for more than a decade, and serves as Chair of the AAJ’s Hormone Therapy Litigation Group.

Millrood secured jury verdicts in all four of the hormone therapy cases he tried, including a $34.3 million verdict in November 2009 and another for $72.6 million in December 2011.

Millrood also acted as co-lead counsel in representing some Pennsylvania counties on contingency fees in their pending litigation against opioid drug manufacturers, which now resides in an Ohio federal court. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, bellwether trials there were scheduled to take place later this year.

Millrood has participated in AAJ Litigation Groups and a member of AAJ’s Executive Committee after being elected by the AAJ Board of Governors. He is currently a member of both the AAJ and Pennsylvania Association for Justice (PAJ) Board of Governors, in addition to the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association Board of Directors.

Millrood is admitted to practice in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and in federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the District of New Jersey, the Court of Federal Claims and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
