Radiologist allegedly missed patient's kidney stone on imaging test

PITTSBURGH — A couple allege a radiologist missed a kidney stone on the husband's imaging, which caused him to suffer an infection and other health issues.

Ray B. Miller and Anna B. Miller, M.D., filed a complaint Aug. 24 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Robert P. Stecher, M.D., alleging negligence.

Ray Miller underwent medical imaging at St. Clair Hospital on Aug. 17, 2020, which was ordered by his treating urologist, according to the Millers' complaint. They claim that Stecher, a diagnostic radiologist, failed to see and recognize a "plainly visible" kidney stone on Ray Miller's right kidney in his interpretation report.

The plaintiffs allege that due to Stecher's negligence, Miller's untreated kidney stone became a "bacterial nidus" and caused him to suffer "hydronephrosis with ureteral calculus obstruction," a urinary tract infection and septic shock and he required hospitalization in December of 2020. They claim Stecher failed to thoroughly and properly review Miller's imaging studies and carelessly read the imaging and report positive findings and existing abnormalities.

The Millers seek monetary relief of more than $50,000, trial by jury and all other just relief. They are represented by Edward Balzarini, Jr., of Balzarini & Watson in Pittsburgh.
