Lawsuit: Mechanical door suddenly closed on customer at Giant Eagle

State Court
Gianteagle

PITTSBURGH — A customer who allegedly was injured when a mechanical door suddenly closed on her at a Giant Eagle supermarket is claiming premises liability.

Patrice Crowe filed a complaint Oct. 1 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh alleging premises liability.

Crowe, according to her complaint, was shopping at the Giant Eagle supermarket on North Main Street in Butler on Jan. 2, 2021. She claims that due to the weather conditions, she waited inside for her son to pull the car up to the front entrance to the store.

Crowe alleges that as she exited the store and stepped into the open doorway, the mechanical door suddenly closed on her and caused her to suffer injuries including a hip fracture that required surgery, headaches, neck pain and knee pain. She also alleges as a result of the accident, she incurred large sums in medical treatment costs. Crowe claims Giant Eagle's negligence for failing to warn of the hazard or to repair or replace the defective door. She further claims Giant Eagle failed to adequately inspect the area and the mechanical door.

Crowe seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Eric Chaffin, Partick Booth and Justin Joseph of Chaffin Luhana LLP in Pittsburgh.
