The tragic story of an elderly woman's final days in a Pennsylvania care facility has sparked a lawsuit alleging severe negligence and mistreatment. The Estate of Mildred Rieder, represented by Lorraine Fox as administratrix, filed a complaint on April 11, 2025, in the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County against Presbyterian SeniorCare and Senior Care Network, Inc., along with several associated entities. The lawsuit claims that Rieder suffered multiple injuries and ultimately died due to the defendants' negligence.
The complaint details the series of events leading up to Rieder's death at age 87 on April 22, 2023. Initially admitted to Manchester Commons' assisted living unit in November 2020, Rieder was later transferred to their memory care unit due to her dementia. In February 2023, she was hospitalized for internal bleeding but returned to Manchester Commons' skilled nursing unit where she began receiving services from Amedisys and AseraCare Defendants. During her stay, Rieder allegedly experienced repeated falls resulting in significant injuries including a hip fracture, pressure ulcers, infections, and neglect that contributed to her rapid decline and early death.
The plaintiff accuses the defendants of failing to provide adequate staffing levels and proper training for employees in patient care practices such as wound prevention and management. They are also accused of neglecting basic needs like ensuring proper nutrition and hygiene for Rieder. "All Defendants neglected Plaintiff," the complaint states, highlighting instances where Rieder was left isolated without food or assistance while suffering from severe diarrhea.
Rieder's family reportedly discovered unexplained injuries on her body during visits—bruises on her head and eyes—and were informed by staff about other health issues like COVID-19 infection without appropriate follow-up actions being taken by the facility. The complaint further alleges that despite being aware of these issues, all defendants failed to perform necessary checks or treatments which could have prevented further harm.
In this legal action against Presbyterian SeniorCare entities (referred collectively as "Manchester Defendants"), Amedisys Inc., AseraCare Hospice Care (collectively "Amedisys Defendants"), and others involved with providing hospice services at Manchester Commons facility—the plaintiff seeks judgment for damages exceeding arbitration limits plus interest costs under professional negligence claims related specifically towards each group mentioned above separately within different counts included within their filing documentation provided here today.
