PITTSBURGH — The estate of a woman who was killed by a falling tree limb while on a hiking trail in the Township of Upper St. Clair is claiming wrongful death.

William G. Laird, administrator of the Estate of Kara Ann Leo, filed a complaint Dec. 1 in the Court of Common Pleas for Allegheny County against Township of Upper St. Clair alleging negligence and wrongful death.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, Kara Leo and her husband were taking a walk on the marked hiking trails in Boyce Mayview Park on June 17, 2021. The plaintiff alleges that Kara Leo, age 40, was "violently" struck by a large, severed tree limb that suddenly fell on her and impacted her head, torso and lower extremities.

She died the following day from her injuries. The plaintiff claims that days prior to the accident, severe storms came through the Township of Upper St. Clair and caused trees in the park to be damaged. The suit says park personnel were notified of the dangerous conditions but failed to act.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by James Doring of Goldberg, Persky & White PC in Pittsburgh.
