PHILADELPHIA — A cosmetology student alleges her school's failure to properly train her in using a facial steamer caused her to suffer serious burns.

Myra Samuel filed a complaint March 7 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Fountain of Youth Academy of Cosmetology LLC.

Samuel alleges in her complaint that on June 11, 2021, an employee of the Fountain of Youth Academy of Cosmetology instructed her to use a facial steamer on a fellow student. She claims that while using the facial steamer, the device's water tank suddenly fell off and caused her to suffer serious burns to her face, elbow and thigh.

Samuel alleges the defendant failed to provide her with proper instruction on using the facial steamer, failed to properly train its instructors on use of the steamer and failed to warn of the dangers of using the facial steamer. She also alleges the school did not have proper rules and regulations in place to teach usage of the steamer. Samuel claims as a result of her burns, she suffered disfigurement and scarring, lost wages and incurred medical treatment expenses.

Samuel seeks monetary and all other just relief. She is represented by Carl Schiffman and Benjamin Wilt of The Schiffman Firm LLC in Pittsburgh.
