Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania has taken legal action against an individual for allegedly causing damage to its gas mains. The complaint was filed by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on May 16, 2024, against Steven Chatham. The utility company claims that the defendant's actions resulted in significant damage to their infrastructure.
According to the details outlined in the complaint, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania is a public utility that provides natural gas services across Western Pennsylvania. The company maintains a network of gas mains and pipes beneath public streets and alleys to supply gas to residents and businesses. On or about May 16, 2024, Steven Chatham allegedly excavated near 314 Cavan Drive in Pittsburgh without proper authorization or caution, leading to damage of these critical gas lines. As a result, Columbia Gas incurred repair costs amounting to $1,171.40.
The plaintiff asserts that they have always maintained their infrastructure with high-quality materials and have ensured its installation adheres to safety standards to prevent any potential damage. They accuse Chatham of negligence for failing to recognize the presence of these underground utilities before proceeding with excavation work. This oversight led to what Columbia Gas describes as willful interference with their property rights and responsibilities as a public utility provider.
Columbia Gas is seeking judgment from the court for the full amount spent on repairs plus any additional costs associated with the lawsuit. They emphasize that this sum reflects necessary expenditures documented in their internal records and appended as Exhibit "1" in their filing.
Representing Columbia Gas is attorney William T. Molczan from Weltman, Weinberg & Reis Co., L.P.A., based in Pittsburgh. The Case ID is W22 Rev 09/2024.
