PITTSBURGH — A traveler alleges a defective escalator at Pittsburgh International caused her to fall and suffer a fractured ankle.

Kara Baldwin filed a complaint April 18 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County against Allegheny County Airport Authority and Pittsburgh International Airport alleging negligence.

Baldwin alleges in her suit that she was at the Pittsburgh International Airport on June 3, 2021. She claims that due to a non-functioning escalator that stopped and created "steps of varying riser heights," she fell down several stairs and struck the ground.

Baldwin alleges as a result of her fall she suffered an ankle fracture which required surgical repair. She claims the defendants' negligence for allowing the escalator to "fall into a state of disrepair," failing to inspect the escalator to ensure its function and for not blocking off or warning of the dangerous condition. Baldwin also claims the defendants were negligent for allowing the hazard to exist when they knew or should have known that it presented a danger.

She alleges another person was previously injured while on the defective escalator, yet the defendants still allowed pedestrian traffic to continue to access the escalator.
