ERIE — A lieutenant with the City of Greensburg police is claiming he was denied promotions due to his age.

W. Robert Jones filed a complaint  Aug. 31 in the U.S. District Court or the Western District of Pennsylvania against the City of Greensburg alleging age discrimination and retaliation.

Jones, according to his compliant, began working as a patrol officer for the City of Greensburg on July. 9, 2002. He then worked his way up to sergeant, then lieutenant and in January of 2022, applied for the position of chief of police, according to the suit.

Jones alleges that a younger, less qualified applicant was chosen and that he was ranked "second highest" among the applicants. He further alleges that in June of 2022, he underwent an interview for the position of captain with a less qualified applicant being chosen over him for the position.

Jones claims the City of Greensburg failed to promote him to the chief of police position because of his age. He alleges that the City of Greensburg's actions constitute a violation of the Age Discrimination and Employment Act and in April of 2022, he filed a charge of discrimination against the City with the EEOC. Jones further alleges that the City's denial of promoting him to captain was in retaliation for his EEOC complaint.

Jones seeks monetary relief, reinstatement to a suitable position, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by Colleen Ramage Johnston and Nikki Velisaris Lykos of Ramage Lykos LLC in Pittsburgh.
