PHILADELPHIA — A family is suing Target and the manufacturers of a scooter/hoverboard after the product suddenly ignited and caused a fire to their home.

Michael Reichley and Debra Reichley filed a complaint Aug. 15 in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas against Jetson Electric Bikes LLC and Target Corporation alleging negligence. The defendants recently removed the case to federal court.

According to the Reichleys' complaint, they purchased two Jetson Strike Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards from Target in February and March of 2020. They claim that on Sept. 15, 2021, the scooter/hoverboard that was being stored in the living room closet of their home in North Wales suddenly ignited and caused the home to be engulfed in flames and smoke.

The plaintiffs allege the defendants failed to design, inspect and distribute a functioning and defect free scooter/hoverboard. They also allege the defendants failed to provide sufficient warnings and instructions with the product and that the scooter/hoverboard is an unreasonably dangerous product. The plaintiffs claim the defendants designed and sold the product with dangerous defects in its lithium ion battery and circuit board electrical wiring.

The plaintiffs seek monetary relief, interest and all other just relief. They are represented by Raymond Mack and Patrick Hughes of de Luca Levine LLC in East Norriton.
