PITTSBURGH - A woman is suing the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, claiming men were given jobs for which she was more qualified.

A lawsuit was filed against the Department of Corrections by Deah Babeji on Jan. 3 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Babeji says she started her work at State Correctional Institution Fayette in 2020 as the Corrections Utility Plant Operator, which is responsible for operations and maintenance of all utilities on the exterior of the facility.

She transferred to SCI-Greene in 2021, then a year later began applying for positions within her department working weekday day hours with holidays off.

She says she was refused an interview for a first job then interviewed for a second day shift position, but both times men were hired instead of her.

The complaint chronicles other similar situations that followed.

Kyle H. Steenland of The Workers' Rights Law Group represents Dabeji.
