A recent court filing has thrust a local tavern into the spotlight as a patron alleges negligence following a severe injury on their premises. On October 1, 2022, Vickie Harris filed a complaint in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania against Big Ham Group, Inc., doing business as Bigham Tavern, along with its associated entities.

The lawsuit stems from an incident where Harris claims she suffered significant injuries due to hazardous conditions at Bigham Tavern. According to the complaint, Harris was exiting the restaurant after having lunch when she slipped on a wet rug and floor in the vestibule area. The fall resulted in her right leg getting caught between the wall and the restaurant door. Harris contends that this accident was caused by "the dangerous, hazardous, unsafe, and defective condition of the premises," which included a very wet and slick floor and an uneven rug.

Harris asserts that Bigham Tavern Defendants failed to maintain a safe environment for their patrons. She alleges that there were no measures taken to address or warn about these hazards. As a result of this alleged negligence, Harris sustained multiple injuries including fractures in three locations of her left ankle, dislocation of her left ankle, altered gait resulting in a limp, insomnia, bruises, contusions, constant pain and discomfort in her left ankle, as well as emotional distress such as nervousness and depression.

The plaintiff's complaint details how these injuries have had profound impacts on her life. She claims she has endured severe pain and suffering, both physically and emotionally. Furthermore, Harris states that she has been unable to enjoy various pleasures of life that she previously enjoyed and has undergone numerous medical treatments with potential future surgeries required. Additionally, she anticipates incurring substantial medical expenses for ongoing treatment and care.

In terms of legal relief sought from the court, Harris is requesting compensatory damages exceeding the jurisdictional limits for compulsory arbitration. This includes court costs and interest among other forms of relief deemed just by the court.

Representing Vickie Harris are attorneys Brian S. Anderson and Peter D. Friday from Friday & Cox LLC.
