Woman claims Hartford Life erroneously terminated her disability benefits

Insurance 04

PITTSBURGH - An Allegheny County woman is suing Hartford Life and Accident Insurance Company, citing alleged breach of contract for denying her long-term disability claim.

Colleen Steimer, who was employed by The TJX Companies in West Mifflin, filed a complaint March 10 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania alleging the Connecticut-based insurer refused to pay disability benefits to her.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges she was disabled due to foot pain and injuries and other disorders, and thus applied for long-term disability benefits, which were approved until they were later incorrectly terminated. Steimer holds Hartford Life responsible because it allegedly terminated her benefits based on their erroneous review of her medical records, in violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

The plaintiff seeks damages, disability benefits, interest, employment benefits, court costs and any further relief the court grants. She is represented by R. Scott Wilson of Eric Buchanan & Associates PLLC in Chattanooga, Tenn.
