Woman seeks more than $300,000 from Allied Building Corp. over life insurance policy

Insurance 02

ALLENTOWN - A Weatherly woman alleges her claim for life insurance benefits was denied because of the actions of her decedent's employer.

Brenda Hoffman filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Sept. 15 against Allied Building Corp., alleging breach of fiduciary duty

According to the complaint, the plaintiff's spouse Eric Hoffman died in January 2016 and had life insurance policies issued by the defendant through UNUM Life Insurance Co. of America. She alleges UNUM denied her claim for life insurance benefits on the allegations the defendant failed to inform it that the decedent had been laid off.

The plaintiff holds Allied Building Corp. responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to inform UNUM of the temporary layoff and failed to inform Eric Hoffman of his right to convert the group policies to individual ones.

The plaintiff seeks an order requesting the defendant to pay benefits in the sum of $321,000, interest, court costs and any further relief the court grants. She is represented by Paul E. Vangrossi of Vangrossi & Recchuiti in Norristown.
