Woman alleges she is entitled to disability benefits from Standard Life Insurance Co. of New York

Insurance 02

PITTSBURGH – An Erie woman alleges her claim for long-term disability benefits was wrongfully denied.

Gay Catania filed a complaint on Dec. 18, 2017, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against The Standard Life Insurance Co. of New York and Gatehouse Media Inc. Welfare Plan alleging violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she worked as a human resources manager and became disabled during her employment in January 2016. The suit states that during this time she applied for disability benefits and that she received short-term disability benefits from February to July 2016, but her claim for long-term disability benefits was denied.

The plaintiff holds The Standard Life Insurance Co. of New York and Gatehouse Media Inc. Welfare Plan responsible because the defendants allegedly denied plaintiff's claim for disability benefits despite having sufficient medical evidence to support her claim for disability.

The plaintiff seeks declaration that she is entitled to disability benefits, payment of all past-due benefits, interest, court costs and any further relief the court grants. She is represented by Talia Ravis of Law Office of Talia Ravis PA in Kansas City, Missouri.
