MEDIA - A Downingtown couple sued Paoli Memorial Hospital's owners and operators after the wife allegedly tripped and was injured exiting the hospital after a doctor's appointment.
According to documents filed in February in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas, plaintiff Lisa Egan was leaving a doctor's appointment on April 5, 2019. She walked along the second-story hallway to a doorway that was marked with an "exit" sign, and descended two flights of stairs, where she then encountered another door that led out of the building.
Egan says there was no signs or other indicators that the doors and stairs she had used were not actually intended for patient use and were instead for either staff, personnel, or fire/emergency.
The plaintiff stepped out of the first-floor door not expecting the seven-inch immediate drop-off from the door to the concrete below. As a result, she fell coming out of the building, sustaining a knee injury that required surgical operation, the suit claims.
The defendants are charged with negligence and loss of consortium, for which the Egans seek at least $50,000 in damages.
The plaintiffs are represented by Young, Ricchiuti, Caldwell and Heller LLC.
