WILLIAMSPORT - The estate of a man who died at 84 years old blames his treatment at Geisinger Clinic.

A wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit was filed March 18 in Williamsport federal court against Geisinger Medical Center, Geisinger Clinic, and several of their doctors.

The plaintiffs, Maria Gill and Otilia Fernandez-Yanez, allege that negligent medical care at the center led to the injury and subsequent death of Rogelio Duarte Espinoza.

Espinoza was sent to Geisinger Medical Center on July 5, 2022, for atrial fibrillation, bilateral pleural effusions and elevated bilirubin, plus lower extremity swelling and other issues including abnormal liver function.

He was determined to have a gallstone in the common bile duct that was removed via surgery the next day. A subsequent surgery revealed a 2 mm hole in the common bile duct, which then received a 10 cm stent.

Abdomen pain followed that led doctors to suspect a bile leak.

"Decedent suffered from an uncontrolled bile duct leak and undrained bile contained in his abdominal cavity which led to septic shock and multi-system organ failure resulting in Decedent’s untimely demise on July 20, 2022," the suit says.

Lawyer Corey Mowrey of Rieders Travis is pursuing the case.
