Ed Peelman has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, John Doe 1, John Doe 2, John Doe 3, ABC Corp. 1, ABC Corp. 2, ABC Corp. 3, XYZ Co. 1, XYZ Co. 2, and XYZ Co. 3 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (Case ID not assigned), on May 13, 2024.

According to the complaint filed by attorneys Jessica Foster of Smith Clinesmith LLP and Piayon Lassanah of Kannah & Lassanah LLC, Ed Peelman was admitted to UPMC Presbyterian on May 12, 2022 for brain infection surgery and was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks. During this period, the nursing staff allegedly failed to turn and reposition him every two hours as required, leading to the development of a severe Stage IV pressure ulcer on his coccyx area.

Peelman continues to require clinical treatment and monitoring for the pressure wound nearly two years later and suffers ongoing pain due to the injury sustained under UPMC Presbyterian's care. The plaintiff claims that these injuries were clinically avoidable had he been given consistent care according to accepted standards and defendants' own policies.

Peelman is seeking compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $50,000 for negligence including failure to provide adequate care planning and intervention, inadequate staffing levels, insufficient training of staff members, and violation of federal and state regulations.
