Woman claims Cigna Group Insurance unlawfully denied benefits

Insurance 07

PITTSBURGH – An Ohio woman alleges her claim for disability benefits was wrongfully denied.

Joisse Cagey filed a complaint on Nov. 2 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against Life Insurance Co. of North America, doing business as Cigna Group Insurance, alleging violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff is a former employee of UPMC Passavant Hospital and had a long-term disability policy with the defendant. The suit states that she became disabled due to several medical ailments but her claim for disability benefits was denied by the defendant in May.

The plaintiff holds Life Insurance Co. of North America responsible because she alleges the defendant's denial of her disability benefits was illegal and unreasonable.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant for the amount of all benefits due and owing plus interest, court costs and any further relief the court grants. She is represented by Francis M. Moore of Mansmann & Moore LLP in Pittsburgh.
